Abstract

This paper examines the institutional history and evolution of Radio Pakistan during the twentieth century. Initially introduced by the British government in India for commercial, propaganda, and entertainment purposes, radio broadcasting began with private radio clubs before transiting to the establishment of All India Radio. After partition, Radio Pakistan was carved out of All India Radio, mirroring the division of India and Pakistan. Starting with three stations, it expanded to 24 by 2000, reaching 96% of Pakistan’s population. Despite numerous challenges, Radio Pakistan became a significant source of information and entertainment, navigating obstacles to establish itself as the "voice of the nation." During critical historical moments, such as the 1965 and 1971 wars, it played a pivotal role in boosting national morale and fostering unity. Additionally, it contributed to social development through educational content, raising awareness on health, agriculture, and women’s rights, especially in rural areas. However, the rise of television, the internet, and private media channels in the 21st century led to a sharp decline in its influence. By 2022, only 10% of Pakistanis continued to listen to the radio, with Radio Pakistan’s content criticized for being centralized and politically biased. This article explores Radio Pakistan’s institutional development in the twentieth century, highlighting its role as an agent of change and awareness during that period. It also provides a glimpse into its recent challenges and diminished prestige. The evolution of Radio Pakistan in the 20th century is a journey worth examining, as it stood by the nation in times of both joy and sorrow, serving as its eyes and ears.
